John “Jack” Owens Evans

MALAD – John “Jack” Owens Evans, 83 of Malad, and formerly of Downey, returned to the care of his Heavenly Father Tuesday, March 22, 1994, of natural causes.

He was born May 23, 1910, in Cherry Creek, Idaho, a son of Charles Williams and Mary May Owens Evans. He attended school in Cherry Creek and Downey. He married Gladys Christensen November 6, 1929 in Malad. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on November 10, 1952.

He was an elder in the LDS Church, Malad Third Ward. He had farmed in Cherry Creek and Downey until 1955, when he purchased the Oneida Grocery, later to be named Jax Snax, a business he and his wife operated until 1981.

He loved hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed the children who frequented his store over the years, as well as spending time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, of Malad; seven sons, three daughters and their spouses, Merrill and GenaLee Evans of Blackfoot, Glade and Joanie Evans of Phoenix, Ariz; Larry and Karen Evans of Brigham City, Utah; Carolyn and Milton Roche of Thatcher, Idaho; Norman and Sally Evans of Panorama City, Calif.; Dean and Mary Evans of Smithfield, Utah; Jack Evans of Collinston, Utah; Judy and Reed Teuscher of Eagle, Idaho, Sam Evans of Pocatello, Kathie and Wayne Garner of South Jordan, Utah; 27 grandsons, 18 granddaughters, 28 great-grandsons and 25 great-granddaughters; three brothers, Lynn Evans of Apache, Ariz.; Rex Evans of Pocatello, Idaho; and Cecil Evans of Green Valley, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lucille, one sister, Ruth, and one brother, Delos.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, 1994, at 11 a.m. in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel, Bishop Brad Thorpe officiating. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, on Friday evening, March 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Downey City Cemetery.
