OREM, Utah – J. Guy Gleed, Jr. 69, died peacefully at home April 14, 2001, due to complications of diabetes.
J. was born December 9, 1931, in Malad, Idaho, to Julius Guy and Nellie Gleed. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13, and after graduating from Malad High School, he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in eastern Canada.
Four weeks after returning, he married his sweetheart, Neola Anderson, of Downey, Idaho on February 20, 1953 in the LDS Temple in Logan, Utah. They moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where J. apprenticed as a dental lab technician. In 1962, J. moved his family to Provo, where he founded Utah Valley Dental Lab.
After retirement in 1994, J. and Neola served two years as family history missionaries in Salt Lake City, 18 months as Temple Square ushers, and two years in the Mission Presidency of the Family History Mission. J. recently moved with his wife, Neola, to Orem, Utah, after living 36 years in the Edgemont area of Provo.
J. was very active in church and community service. He was a member and past president of the Sertoma Club of Provo. J. served on many committees with the America’s Freedom Festival at Provo, and he also served as general chairman of this festival for two years. Under J’s leadership, the America’s Freedom Festival at Provo received the Valley Forge Freedom Award.
J. served in numerous callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including bishop, Scout master, high councilor, counselor in stake presidency and in the Young Men’s organization. From his church J. received the Edgemont Stake Aaronic Priesthood Youth Exemplary Manhood Award, and from the Boy Scouts of America he received the District Award of Merit. J. also served his family in numerous kind and compassionate ways.
J. is survived by his wife of 4 years, Neola. Also surviving are their two children, Vicki G Willes and her husband, Richard of Provo, Utah, and Kent Gleed, M.D., and his wife, Lynne of Omaha, Nebraska. J. has five grandchildren: Jessica W Thacker and her husband Jim Nathan, Justin (currently serving an LDS mission in Venezuela), Brandon and Lindsey Gleed; and one great grandson, Jake Thacker. He is also survived by his loving mother, Nellie S. Gleed, of Provo; and five siblings, Joyce Knight of Denver, Colorado, Darl Gleed of Malad, Idaho. Blair Gleed of Layton, Utah, Diane Treasure of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Joan Broman of Seattle Washington.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 18, at the Cascade First Ward Chapel, 481 East Center Street, Orem. Utah, at 1 p.m. Friends may call at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo, tonight. Tuesday, April 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at the ward chapel on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in East Lawn Memorial Hills in Provo.
