Hollis Marie Gorringe Davis

Hollis Marie Gorringe Davis, 88, a resident of Smith field, Utah for the last six years, formerly of Salt Lake City, passed away June 26, 2008 of causes incident to age. Hollis was born March 21, 1920 in Ogden, Utah to Joseph William Gorringe and Catherine Emma Ferguson. She lived her early years in Ogden and attended public schools in Salt Lake City, where she spent most of her life. She graduated from South High School in 1937. She attended LDS Business College and became proficient in bookkeeping. She met and married D. Jay Davis on March 10, 1948. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived on the Davis family farm near Malad, Idaho for several years then moved to Salt Lake City where she lived until six years before her death.

Hollis was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the year she held various church positions in the Relief Society, MIA, Primary and Sunday School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jay of 45 years; brothers Edward and Orville; sisters Lucile, Mervylle, Emma, and Laurel. Hollis is survived by her four children, David J. Davis, Jr. (Debra), Catherine Crookston (Newell), Layne S. Davis (MaryJo), and Blair R. Davis (Sherri); 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.

Hollis enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper and later as a quality control inspector. Mother had many hobbies including playing the piano and organ, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, cake decorating and gardening. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling and playing softball. Her love of flowers and plants was evident to anyone who entered her yard or home. If you had a dying plant she could always take it and nourish it back to health. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her service to the needy and especially those who were ill was exemplary.

Funeral services will be held July 3, 2008 at 12 noon at Wasatch Lawns Mortuary. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawns.
