Malad…Gloria Thorpe Daniels, 81, wife of Rex Daniels, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012 at her home. Gloria was born in Ogden, Utah on June 1, 1931 to William D. and Wanda Hughes Thorpe. She was the first of four children. As a young girl she learned to tap dance in the 1st grade. On many occasions she tap danced on the table as her grandfather Wilford Thorpe sang “Springtime in the Rockies.” Special memories were forged as her family lived in the back of the home and her grandparents in the front. At the age of 8, she was baptized in the Willows (Thorpe Spring) of Samaria. Gloria attended school in Samaria, Pleasantview, and Malad High. Good neighbors, fun times, and lots of hard work were representative of her childhood joys.

Gloria married Rex Daniels on June 1, 1951 in Pleasantview, Idaho in Gloria’s family home. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on February 17, 1965. They just recently celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Gloria has been active in the LDS Church serving ward and stake positions in the Primary, Cub Scouts, Sunday School, Young Women, and Relief Society. She served in the Malad Family History Center for many years. Gloria and Rex served in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple as officiators for 8 years.

She also served in the state Cowbells Association, secretary to superintendent of Malad schools, bookkeeper for Glen B’s Sinclair, and worked at the local bank for 40 years. Many people remember her helpful smile.

Gloria is known for her fond memories of ancestors and the historical accounts of community members. She loved Memorial Day and decorated many family headstones throughout the valley.

She loved making quilts for all the family babies, graduations, and weddings. She was a master in cross word puzzles. For many years she played the piano, often accompanying Rex as he sang. She faithfully supported Rex in all of his Hereford cattle obligations, with many winter calves warming in the kitchen.

As mother of seven busy children, Gloria lovingly taught them by example how important it is to have a clean house and good food on the table. As a couple, Gloria and Rex have taught by example their love of the Lord and His goodness, hard work, and family togetherness. She will be lovingly remembered as Grandma DD and for her devotion to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a baby brother; sister, Billie Ann Christensen; and granddaughter, Jennie Marie Daniels.

She is survived by her husband, Rex; brother, Doug (Tonya) Thorpe; and children: Danielle, Cathy (Ray) Peterson, Don (Brenda), David (Diane), Danece (Mike) Hess, Danny (Teresa), Darin (Shawna). She has been blessed with 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and more on the way.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 21, 2012 at 12 noon in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel. Friends may visit with the family on monday evening August 20 from 6-8 pm at the Horsley Funeral Home 132 W. 300 N. and at the funeral home on Tuesday prior to the service from 10:30-11:30 am Burial will follow in the Malad City Cemetery.
