Fred Eugene Balis

Our loving father and grandfather, Fred E. Balis, 84, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012.

Fred was born in Filer, Idaho, to Frank and Edith Cole Balis on August 11, 1928. He grew up on a farm in Eden, Idaho and attended the Russell Lane School and Eden High School.

After working on his father’s farm, Fred served in the Unites States Army during the Korean War. After his military service, he attended Business School at Idaho State University and Henager College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Fred spent much of his life working in construction and farming in Utah and Nevada. He moved back to Downey, Idaho and operated Marsh Valley Equipment. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion.

Fred married Shirley Grow in 1954 and had two children, Roy Douglas (Doug) and Tamara Lee (Tammy).

Fred had a great sense of humor and a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, going to the horse races, and taking long walks. Fred loved taking care of his garden and spending time with his son and daughter and the love his life, Shirley. He and Shirley both enjoyed traveling and watching football together.

Fred had a big heart. Words cannot express how much we will miss him.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley, and a brother, Kenneth Balis, a sister, Marjorie Baldwin, and a grandson, Kent Balis (Jamie).

Fred is survived by his son Doug (Lana) Balis, daughter Tammy (Bernie) Kelly, two grandchildren, Aurelia (Craig) Norris and Lyndsey (Josten) Cypriano, and nine great grand-children along with numerous nieces, nephews.

Graveside dedication for Shirley and Fred will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Park located at 2296 Kimberly Rd. Twin Falls, Id. Military Rites will be given for Fred by the American Legion post 21 from Downey at this time. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Horsley’s Marsh Valley Funeral Home.

In Fred’s memory, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 21, Downey, Idaho.
