Evan E. Jones

Evan E. Jones, 89, beloved father and grandfather, died Wednesday, December 1, 1993 at the Bannock Geriatric Center following a lingering illness.

Evan was born November 14, 1904, in St. John, Idaho to Evan W. and Mary Evans Johns. He received his early education by attending the grade school in St. John, and the high school in Malad City, Idaho.

He married Lillie Jones in Malad June 6, 1923. They later solemnized their marriage in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple in 1941. After their marriage, Evan attended the Idaho Technical Institute. He taught at Wheatland, Groveland and East Thomas, where he also was principal.

In 1929 he accepted an offer to work for Safeway Food Stores, and managed stores in American Falls and Blackfoot. For over 20 years he played for dance bands and marching bands in the various communities. He jointed the American Food Stores chain in Malad, transferred to Ogden, Utah, where he managed stores for seven years, and then moved to Pocatello, where he established the American Food Store located on East Center Street.

When World War II was declared, he became a carpenter and foreman of construction at the Naval Ordnance Plant. After the was he built houses in the Pocatello area with Austin Anderson. He returned to Idaho State College, where he received his bachelor of arts degree and his master of arts in education.

He taught in the Pocatello school system, finishing his career by teaching 14 years at Irving Junior High School. He retired in 1970, being honored for his dedicated service.

In 1952, Evan and Lillie bought the Jones family farm at St. John. The family outings then shifted to the family farm at St. John. After his wife’s death in 1978, he continued to farm and to travel extensively, visiting his family.

He was an active member of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, servicing in many teaching and leadership positions.

After many years of serious health problems, he entered the Bannock Geriatric Center, where he lived until his death.

He is survived by three daughters and their spouses. Mary Donna and Jay Jensen, Maureen and Richard Crandall, all of Pocatello, and Diane and Robert King, Twin Falls, Idaho; four sons and their spouses, Evan and Ralpheyn Jones of Bountiful, Utah, Dan and Pat Jones, Salt Lake City, Utah, Richard and Maxine Jones, Fresno, California, and David and Nancy Jones, East Rockaway, New York; one brother, Edward E. Jones, Logan, Utah; five sisters, Mable Butner, Thelma Rockwell and Alice Helppie, all of Walnut Creek California, Wilda Thompson, Fremont, California, and Vera Welker, Logan, Utah; 35 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. Evan was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie, his daughter, Helen Ruth Harwood, three sisters, three grand-children and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, at noon in the Latter-day Saint Sixth Ward Chapel, 42 Princeton Ave., with Bishop Ken Bernt officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., and then at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of the services. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
