Edith Lucille Jones Thomas

Edith Lucille Jones Thomas, 72, of Malad, died Saturday, April 17, 1993, in Reno, Nevada, while traveling with her husband. She was born in Malad on August 31, 1920, and the daughter of Elizabeth Sarah Bake and James L. Jones.

She attended Malad schools and graduated from Malad High School at the age of 15 as valedictorian. After working as the bookkeeper at Evans Co-op, she attended the University of Idaho in Moscow where she earned a degree in business after serving as president of Mortar-board and as the first woman student body president.

She was selected as an intern for the Bureau of the Budget in Washington, D.C., and worked there for four years until the illness of her mother brought her back to Malad.

She married Boyd Thomas in 1950; their marriage was later solemnized in the LDS temple in Logan (Utah). She began teaching at Malad High School in 1952. Besides teaching shorthand, typing, office practice, English, and Journalism for 33 years, she served as adviser for the senior and junior classes, the pep club, and most recently, for the school newspaper (The Kampus Mirror). She also served as president of the Oneida Education Association. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints.

She is survived by her husband of Malad; daughter Gloria Jean of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Washburn of Portsmouth, England; sons Boyd James of Germantown, Maryland, and Richard David of Idaho Falls and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 22, 1993 at noon in the Malad First Ward, with Bishop Jared Crowther presiding. Interment will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
