Donna Hancock Vanderwood

Malad, Idaho–On April 9, 2013, our sweet mother, Donna Vanderwood, passed from this earthly life. Last Christmas day Mom said she didn’t want to die until she was old. Then on March 23rd she had her 91st birthday.

Donna Hancock was born in Cambridge, Idaho March 23, 1922, to Alvin Cyrus Hancock and Lonetta Criddle Hancock. She graduated from Downey High School in 1940. In June of that year, she married Howard Vanderwood and moved to Malad. She loved the Malad Valley.

Mother was the last of her family surviving her parents, two sisters and a brother. She and dad had ten children: Beverly Annette (deceased); Cheryl (Michael) Madson, Riverdale; H. Brent (Pam) Vanderwood, Mission Viejo; Jon L. (Judy) Vanderwood, North Ogden; R. Van (Clair) Vanderwood, Boise; Donald Alvin (Helen) Vanderwood, South Jordan; Bill M. (Jill) Vanderwood, West Valley; Jean Boley, Malad; Joe C. Vanderwood (deceased); and David E. (Susan) Vanderwood, Kearns. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one gg grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1993, one daughter, one son, two sons-in-law and one grandchild.

Mom was instrumental in our family delivering the Ogden Standard around Malad Valley for many years. After her family was raised, mom worked at the Malad Hospital until retirement. She loved visiting with her friends at the Malad Senior Center. Family was the most important thing to our mother. We will miss the smell of baking bread and her joy when family stopped in to visit. She especially enjoyed long rides with family and friends. Her son, Bill, was vigilant about making mom happy by taking her on rides to Logan and Pocatello.
