Delbert “Del” Allen Leavitt

Delbert “Del” Allen Leavitt, 70, of Malad, died Sunday September 5 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello. He was born June 6, 1923 in Malad, a son of Allen Eugene Leavitt and Dora Rose. He was raised by his mother and William R. Thomas. He married Joan Williams and they were later divorced.

Del graduated from Malad High School, where he was Golden Gloves Boxing Champion. After graduation, he joined the U. S. Army during W.W. II and served 26 months overseas. After his discharge, he returned to Malad and worked at various jobs. He purchased an American Oil service station and later owned and operated the Conoco station until retirement five years ago.

He was a member of the LDS Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, where he had served as Post Commander and District Commander. Del loved horses and spent many happy hours working with his cutter racing team. With his brother Don, he had won the World Championship Cutter Races in 1971.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Albert (JoDel) Jones of Malad, a son Scott Leavitt of Fairview, Wyoming; nine grandchildren two sisters, Marilyn Mata and Doreen Thomas, both of Malad; two brothers, Monte Thomas of Malad and Billy Thomas of Glendale, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 9 at 12 noon in the Benson-Horsley Funeral home. Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery with military rites accorded by the American Legion, Ernest W. Jones, post #65.
