Daniel Leon Evans

The body of Daniel Leon Evans, 18, was recovered Monday at 11:00 a.m. from the Crowther Reservoir where he drowned July 26, 1958 about 4:00 p.m.

After rescue attempt by his swimming companion, Ray Neil Jones, who discovered Danny in trouble from apparent cramping, the Malad police authorities were notified immediately of the accident.

Recovery work was directed by the Malad Volunteer Fire Dept., Sheriff John A. Evans, Police Chief Wm. E. Thomas, with assistance from the Logan and Ogden police and many Oneida residents with boats and other equipment.

Members of the Hill Air Base and Salt lake City skin diving clubs who participated in recovering the body were Lewis Anderson, Earl Allen, Dave Milligan, Dee Kunz, Ogden; Bruce D. Peterson, James M. Parks, Gus Bueter, Salt lake City; Dick Spackman, Hill Air Force Base.

Daniel Leon Evans was born December 15, 1939 at Malad, the son of Dan J. and Mary Sue Sorenson Evans.

Receiving his elementary education in the Malad schools, the popular young student was a member of the 1958 Malad High School graduating class. In addition to working with his father and his uncle, Bill G. Evans, Malad building contractors, during the summer months, he participated in many extra-curricular activities during his high school years, active in baseball, basketball and football, a sport in which he earned his letter for four years, and was active in the high school music department.

As a musician, he was a member of the Malad High School band, participated in music festivals as a soloist and with ensembles and also served as bugler and was an honorary member of the Ernest W. Jones Post of the American Legion. Danny was a priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Linda Sue and Heidi, Malad; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel K. Evans, Malad, and Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Sorenson, Ogden, UT.
