Cora Ethel Sutton Thornton

Cora Ethel Sutton Thornton, 98, of 314 West Buell, passed away early Sunday evening, January 24, 1993, in Pocatello (Idaho).

She was born December 4, 1894, in Grantsville, Utah, a daughter of James Thomas Sutton and Annie Maria Cooke Sutton She attended local schools in Grantsville, Utah. Her mother died July 15, 1913. Ethel helped raise her father’s family of seven children.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had taught Primary for over 10 years. She also was a teacher in the Sunday school, secretary of YLMI for several years, and was later first counselor to the president of the Mutual for several years, and had been a Beehive teacher, and also a teacher in Relief Society, and a visiting teacher. She enjoyed genealogy work, and had played the organ in Sunday school. She belonged to Camp Hunt of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers while living in Downey, and later the Centennial Camp in Pocatello(Idaho).

On July 22, 1919, she married Ephraim Thornton in Pocatello. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on November 10, 1952. They lived on the family homestead on the Malad Divide for 50 years. She moved to Pocatello in March of 1969. Mr. Thornton passed away January 20, 1965. She moved to Pocatello when Interstate 15 passed through their farm.

She made many quilts and also enjoyed crocheting and embroidering. She was excellent cook, and her family especially enjoyed her bread and Christmas cakes. She also wrote poetry.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Thornton, Pocatello; two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Annie Myrl) Tillotson, and Mrs. Gene (Wanda Arvilla) Rademacher, both of Pocatello; one brother, George LaMar Sutton, Tooele, Utah; 16 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; 12 and six step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ephraim, two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Bernice Ethel) Harrison and Vera Ilene Thornton, three brothers, Verdi Grant, Arthur Rueben and Melvin Thomas, six sisters, Mrs. Parley (Elizabeth Ann) Paskett, Esther Jane Sutton, Flossie Sutton, Martha Blanche Sutton, Mrs. Albert (Linda Gladys), Kilpack, Mrs. Theadore (Rachel Arvilla) Hanks, one infant half-sister, and Linzey Nephi Sutton, and two stepsons, Deryl Thornton, and an infant, Vernon Thornton,
plus a stepdaughter, Ruth Helen Thornton Palmer.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 28, 1993, at noon at the Pocatello LDS Central Stake Center, 225 Oakwood Drive. Interment will be in the Downey Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Manning Funeral Chapel, 510 North 12th Ave., and on Thursday for one hour prior to services at the church.
