Clyde LeRoy Burrup, 83, died Tuesday, April 30, 1996 at Bannock Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho.

He was born October 31, 1912 near Downey, Idaho, to William Edward and Elizabeth Fox Burrup. He married Helen Greaves February 16, 1946 in Preston, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

He graduated from Downey High School in 1930, and from Utah State University in 1936 with a bachelor of science degree in history. He was qualified for an Idaho teaching certificate at the University of Idaho in 1936, and was hired as a teacher and principal at Grandview School, Sterling, Idaho.

He began teaching history at Blackfoot High School in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and was selected to serve as a cryptographer in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank as staff sergeant.

He left school teaching in 1946 to help oversee his parent’s dry farming operation. He reentered the teaching profession as a teacher and principal of Downey Elementary and Junior High School in 1952.

He completed his master of education degree in 1962 at Utah State University. He retired in 1977.

He served as trustee of Bannock County Hospital and Nursing Home from 1963 to 1977, and as chairman of the board of trustees at Marsh Valley Hospital in Downey for a brief period.

He was an active member of the LDS Church. He served as Portneuf stake clerk from 1950 to 1968, stake high priest quorum secretary and Downey LDS Second Ward financial and membership clerk. He was a devoted and reliable home teacher.

He enjoyed the teaching profession, and helped thousands of young people in southeastern Idaho learn the importance of acquiring academic knowledge, and developing personal integrity and responsibility.

His spare time was spent visiting relatives, neighbors, and friends compiling scrapbooks and information related to personal, family and local history, gardening , tackling difficult crossword puzzles, writing letters to friends, relatives and his five young grandchildren, attending Marsh Valley High School and Utah State University sporting events, and helping organize family, community and high school reunions.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Downey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger C. and Sally Roper Burrup, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Jay G. and Dorothy Anderson Burrup, West Valley City, Utah; five grandchildren, who were wrapped around his heart, Amy, Scott, Jeanette, Susan and Catherine Burrup; a sister, Mrs. E. Dean (Marjorie) Henderson, Provo, Utah; sisters-in-law, Ora H. Burrup, Provo, Utah, and LaRue F. Burrup Johnson, Preston, Idaho; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, virgil B. Hartvigsen and Beth B. Keller, and two brothers, Dr. Percy E. and Melvin L. Burrup.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 4, at noon at the Downey LDS Second Ward Meeting house, Downey, Idaho. Family and friends may call at Horsely’s Marsh Valley Funeral Home, Arimo, Idaho, on Friday, May 3, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Downey LDS Church prior to the services on Saturday. Interment will be in the Downey City Cemetery.
