Catherine Pett Cox

POCATELLO – Catherine Pett Cox, 90, , beloved of her family and longtime Pocatello resident, died July 23, 2003 in Layton, UT. For the past five years she has resided at Apple Village in East Layton, Utah.

She was born June 2, 1913, the eldest of eight children of Charles Bruce and Anna Anderson Pett in Mendon, UT. Her early life was spent in Mendon, UT, Arbon and Pocatello, ID. Her education in Arbon’s one room school and the example set by her midwife mother influenced her career as a licensed practical nurse.

Catherine and Frederick Cox were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on December 16, 1932. Their two sons, Kaye and jack were born in Pocatello.

Active in community affairs, she worked as an LPN for 19 years in the office of Dr. Arch T. Wigle. She was a charter member of the Ee-Dah-How chapter of American Business Women, a member of Union Pacific Old Timers Auxiliary, the Pocatello Literary Club and PTA, serving as president in all these organizations. She was a member of the Rebekahs for 16 years. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many capacities including presidencies of MIA and Relief Society, and as a visiting teacher supervisor.

She was a gracious and talented lady who loved being involved in the lives of others. She delighted family and friends with her delicious cooking, her charming wit and her diverse interests in life. She developed impressive talents in oil painting, calligraphy and quilting, which she shared with many. She loved to read and travel, but her favorite pastime was her family. She enjoyed frequent visits from grandchildren, relatives and friends. The cookie jar was always stocked with fresh, homemade goodies.

Her husband, Fred, her parents, a brother, Ezra Taft Pett, Malad, ID and a sister, Gladys Alexander, Phoenix, AZ preceded Catherine in death. She is survived by sons, Kaye B. and his wife, Dolores of Russelville, Alabama, and jack A. and his wife, Janet, of Farmington, UT; grandchildren Susan and Kirk Ward, Elizabeth and Jeff peck, Sarah and John Hicks, Jeremy Cox, Julie Harris, Jeff and Gayle Cox, Julia Cox, John and Amy Cox, Jana and Tyler Brough, Jason and Leslie Cox; and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, Marie Swenson, Malad, ID, Wilma Garner, Ontario, OR, Bruce Pett, Fairfield, CA; Bette Hipp, Nyssa, OR and Karen Sutton, Parma, ID.

Funeral services will be held July 28, 2003 in the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Chapel, Pocatello. Interment will follow services at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
