Boyd Jay Conley

Boyd Jay Conley was born in Malad, Idaho on October 31, 1926 to Uana (Con) and Thyra Conley. He died peacefully in St. George, Utah on July 16, 2015. Boyd was raised in Malad, the eldest in a family of four children. He worked in his father’s service station during his last two years of high school and again in the late 1940’s after returning home from military service. In 1944, Boyd enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Pine Island in the Asiatic Pacific Area campaign and in Italy following the war’s end. Before departing, he completed his classes at Malad High School, but his mother Thyra, along with other parents of servicemen, received his high school diploma, on his behalf, at the annual graduation ceremony. Already a cardshark by the time he boarded his naval vessel, he helped relieve many an unsuspecting sailor of his monthly pay. Boyd was a fisherman par excellence. Watching him cast a fly was art worthy of the movie “A River Runs Through It.” He began perfecting these skills during boyhood on fishing trips with his father and then tried, not always successfully, to pass those skills along to his brothers, sister, sons, daughters, grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. After completing his military service, he attended Utah State in Logan. He then joined Standard Oil and managed service stations in Ogden, Salt Lake City and Pocatello and worked as a Sales Representative until his retirement. He married Catherine Critchfield in 1952 and they became the parents of Pamela Kay, Cristy Ann, Jan Cathleen, Timothy Boyd, David Jay and Brian John. After their marriage ended, he met and married Sonya Breen in 1979. He and Sonya spent their lives together in Pocatello and St. George until her death in 1998. Besides fishing, his other passions were the Nevada casinos, horse races, gardening and the occasional game of golf. The love of horses may have been sparked by his maternal grandfather, D.M. Thomas, who raised and raced several horses during Boyd’s youth. Boyd is survived by brothers, Terry Thomas (Sue), Don Colen (Angela); sister, Kathy Jayne; children, Pamela Kay, Jan Cathleen (Ken Stewart), Timothy Boyd (Sharon), David Jay (Deanna), and Brian John (Jonnette); grandchildren, Jamie (Kelly Smith), Christy (Tighe Satterfield), Kate (Paul Nelson), Alison Ingelstrom, Russ (Brigitte), Kyle, Travis Beutler, Andrea, Alex, Dylan, Cassidy Arae, and Logan; and five great-grandchildren. Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary will oversee his interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City, where he will be buried next to his beloved Sonya, following a graveside service with full military honors on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. Prior to the service, a viewing for family and friends will take place at the mortuary located at 4760 S. State Street in Murray from 11:00-12:00 p.m.
