Arnold “Junior” Naef

Arnold Jr. Naef passed away Wednesday May 8, 2013 in Pocatello, Idaho.

Junior was born November 6, 1929, at Dayton, Idaho. He was the seventh child of Arnold Amuid Naef and Margaret Whitehead Naef. His father was killed in a logging accident before Junior was born. Margaret later married Orson Nelson, who was the only father he ever knew. Attending schools in Dayton, he was active in sports, playing baseball, basketball, and football. He graduated from high school in 1947 and attended Utah State University.

Junior married Bonnie Guy on November 23, 1947. They had three sons, Larry, Kim and Mike. They lived in Lewiston, Utah, where Junior hauled milk. In 1952 the family moved to Caldwell, Idaho. Junior and his brother-in-law Darwin Feller bought five milk routes.

The family moved to Downey in 1955 and this became their home. Junior bought a milk route from Ralph Feller. Milk was hauled in cans and was very hard work.

Junior and Bonnie divorced and in 1976 he married Marlyn Barnes. Junior was always civic-minded and involved with Boy Scouts, Little League Baseball, and church work. He was the Mayor of Downey for two years and an active member of the Downey Lions Club. He was cabinet secretary, Deputy District Governor and Zone Chairman. He served two terms as President of the Downey Lions Club.

Junior has always worked hard and provided well for his family. He has been a loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife Marlyn, sons: Larry (Lana) Salmon, Idaho, Kim, Pocatello, Brad (Sherry) Barnes, Boyce (Jolene) Barnes, McCammon, daughters: Marilee (Jeff) Jones, Bear River City Utah, Shelley (Deon) Mendenhall, St. George, Utah, Deann (Brad) Colling, Idaho Falls and Allyson (Tad) Pearson, Blackfoot. There are 24 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
He is preceded in death by his son Mike, his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Junior will be missed but never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 13 at 12 noon in the Downey LDS 1st Ward Chapel. Friends may visit with the family this evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church and again from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Downey Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Horsley’s Marsh Valley Funeral Home.
